Top-Performing in Academic Medicine

Of the approximately 400 academic hospitals in the nation, Loma Linda University Surgical Hospital is one of 29 named a 2016 Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, recognizing the Surgical Hospital Intensive Care Unit and Acute Care Units as exemplary of the group’s top patient safety, care quality and efficiency standards.  "When Loma Linda purchased [Surgical Hospital] in 2008, one of the goals was to set the bar for excellence in patient care, and this is a validation that our health care team has done that,” says hospital administrator Marie Hodgkins, RN, MBA.

Extraordinary and Applauded Staff

Luchia Hansen, registered nurse on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, won a 2015 DAISY Award for her work with a pregnant patient with a life-threatening coagulopathy, who was not anticipated to live.  The DAISY Award recognizes extraordinary nurses for the important difference they make in all the lives they touch.  Luchia's presence was life-altering for her patient.  Throughout the preparation and placing lines, the patient was weak but conscious and Luchia prayed with her.  The patient lived through her procedure and Luchia brought her to the NICU to see her baby boy for the very first time.

Christian Mission

Despite cutting edge technology and world-class physicians, there are limits to what science can do.  At Loma Linda University Health, we recognize that God's power is greater than our earthly capabilities and encourage a holistic approach to caring for even the most critically ill.  If you liked Patricia's story (above), hear the Medical Intensive Care Unit Medical Director, Dr. H. Bryant Nguyen speak about his own experience as a patient.

The good physician treats disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease
